Case Study: Thames Timber - 'Branching Out'
Valley Education and Training Enterprises Ltd has completed two years of a very successful literacy and numeracy programme at Thames Timber (Southern Cross Forest Products) in Thames. The programme runs both at the sawmill and manufacturing plant.
The first year saw 50 employees take part in 'Branching Out' wherein they received 40 hours of individualised training specific to the work situation. Our Tutor worked shifts at both the sawmill and manufacturing to learn the job from the employee perspective and to learn the literacy and numeracy needs to help write the programme material.
During the second year, continuing support to 20 newly identified employees for this programme along with 25 Team Leaders receiving tutoring on how to teach the programme to their staff. This is the sustainability model and will ensure the programme is embedded in the company and staff alike.
During both years there were a number of staff with high literacy and numeracy needs and these staff received 1:1 training. All learners were tested using the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool (ALNAT) funded by the Government agency, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) who funded the workplace literacy programme.
Alongside this programme, Thames Timber has a 'Competitive Manufacturing' (CMI) Certificate at Level 2 run through FITEC. The literacy and numeracy programme helps engage staff/learners to gain success in one area which helps them engage on the CMI programme.
Industry Promotion
The Branching Out programme has been promoted to industries through the recent ITF Conference in Wellington and has been filmed for the National Centre for Literacy and Numeracy for Adults at Waikato University. It was also show cased at the National Symposium for Literacy and Numeracy in June 2012 at Unitech in Auckland.
